What does an English Language Arts Coach do in a day?

What does an English Language Arts Coach do? I have to say that I love my job. As an English Language Arts Coach I have the opportunity to work with all of the teachers at my school site on improving and implementing the current language arts adoption at our school.


I go into classrooms and demo lessons. Then I have the opportunity to go back into the classroom and watch the teachers use what I have taught them. I love it because I also get to know and associate with all of the children at the school site.

I also conduct the Data Analysis meetings. This is a work in progress as the teachers look at the data which tells how well they are doing in their instruction. We are still working at this, because there is a lot to this process as we look specifically at standards and focus on them for our instruction.


The past month I have added another duty to my list at the school. I am teaching a parenting course for eight weeks on Thursday nights. The assistant principal translates for me. We have had a very good turn out. We do two sessions one from 3-4 and one from6-7. It makes for a long day, but it is worth it as the parents learn how to help their children be good students.
I am very glad that my principal Mr. Murphy had confidence in me and asked me to be the English Language Arts Coach this year. It has been fun!!!

We were joking around with Mr. Murphy our principal about having our picture taken with him and our head custodian Mr. Alex as we fondly call him. So, we all got infront of the camera and had fun! Mr. Alex is on the left and Mr. Murphy is on the right. WE look happy huh!!!

To Kill A Mocking Bird

Last night Jeff and I went to see Jeremy on his opening night of Harper Lee's, To Kill a Mockingbird. Jeremy plays Bob Ewell, a bigoted crazed man who believes that all "coloreds" should be killed. In this very angry, dramatic role, Jeremy pulls off the character so well, that many of his colleagues didn't know that it was him portraying Bob Ewell. Good job Jeremy!! We are Proud of you and your acting accomplishments.
Just a side note, Jeremy has been nominated for best director in the Inland Theater League Awards for his directing of Wizard of Oz last spring.

More about our Monterey Trip

One of the things that Jeff and I enjoy doing is taking road trips! We put the top down on the convertible, played Kenny G and enjoyed Highway 1. Here are some of the beautiful pictures that we took along the way. Can you see our Silver Solara??

Big Sur!

When we arrived in Monterey it was just a little after 4:30 in the afternoon. Jeff Jr. took us to check in at Herrman Hall which is there on the Naval Base. We had a beautiful room which incidentally looked out towards the bay. The base is so lovely and has a lot of wild life on it.

After we checked in we had told Jeff Jr. and Star that we really wanted to go to the wharf for dinner. We actually walked down to the wharf from their apartment. It was a nice night for a walk. So we ate at Rappa's at the end of the pier. We had yummy clam chowder in bread bowls. It was great for a cool evening.

The next day we went on a picnic to Garland Regional Park. We had a great time taking some pictures and just enjoying the scenery. Starlyn had fixed some yummy wraps which we truly enjoyed. After eating we played a really fun game called Apples to Apples.

The next day we traveled to the Monterey Stake building for Stake Conference. The meeting was excellent and we all walked away spiritually fed. We took a little drive and saw the school where Starlyn is the librarian. That afternoon we had a wonderful dinner that included Snow balls, broccoli, a great salad, and some delicious home made whole wheat croissants. Needless to say, we were asking for some of their wonderful recipes. After dinner we enjoyed some home made ice cream, great chocolate cake and a rousing game of scrabble.

On our last morning we went to Asilomar State Beach and just enjoyed the beauty of the earth. Later we went to Whole Foods and a specialty pastry shop. By this time Jeff Jr. wanted to make a turn of decadent chocolate ice cream before we left. So after that we got back on the road at about 2:15 pm. We decided to take another route home so we traveled on several new roads to get to Interstate 5.

We traveled by San Luis Reservoir for several miles. Going home this way we could see a lot of the crops that are grown in California. We traveled by many new pistachio trees. Finally, a sunset that marked a beautiful end to a beautiful weekend with our children in Monterey. Thanks Jeff and Star for a great time!!!

Our trip to Monterey

This President's Day weekend we traveled north to see Jeff and Star in lovely Monterey. We traveled up HWY 1 and enjoyed the beautiful scenery. It was clear and lovely. When we arrived above San Luis Obispo we saw zebras near the grasslands of the Hearst Castle.

We also saw Elephant seals that like to come up and have their calves there on the beach. There must have been hundreds of them. They throw sand on their skin and actually molt during this time. They say that it is easier for them to molt outside of the water. They are huge and we enjoyed watching them for awhile.
